An elementary school student named Shouya Ishida and his friends bully Shouko Nishimiya, a transfer student who was born deaf. When word of the bullying reaches the principal after one of Shoko’s hearing aids breaks, Shouya is framed as the sole perpetrator by his friends. Suddenly treated as the scapegoat, Shouya soon finds himself bullied and ostracized, which leads to self-destructive behavior. Years later, Shouya tries to come to terms with his past.
The story takes place in Ogaki, Gifu, which serves as a suburb of Nagoya. The reproduction of the area is very high. Important spots that really exist include the bridges and the library.
A Silent Voice is a manga adaptation that may have translated better as a series than a film. Regardless, the animation is fantastic, the emotions are palpable, and it’s worth watching.
