Gegege no Kitaro

GeGeGe no Kitaro focuses on the young Kitaro—the last survivor of the Ghost Tribe—and his adventures with other ghouls and strange creatures of Japanese mythology. Along with: the remains of his father, Medama-Oyaji, Nezumi-Otoko, Neko-Musume, and a host of other folkloric creatures, Kitarō strives to unite the worlds of humans and Yōkai. As a classic series based on Mizuki Shigeru’s 1960-onward manga, GeGeGe no Kitaro has been revived countless times, with the most recent TV season airing in 2018.

Sekaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, is Mizuki Shigeru-sensei’s hometown. The city designated an area devoted to the mangaka and his work called Mizuki Shigeru Road, featuring statues of many of his characters and yokai illustrations, a Yokai shrine, and the Mizuki Shigeru Museum. The 2018 anime drew some attention from news outlets for its humorous critique of the Logan Paul Japan Trip Controversy and social media influencer Main Character Syndrome.
