The story of Mori Buntaro, loosely based on real-world climber Kato Buntaro. After moving to a new school, Buntaro is challenged by classmates to solo climb his school building, ending in him vaulting an extreme overhang. After being chewed out by a teacher, he keeps seeking higher and higher peaks, throughout Japan and later abroad. The Climber is a manga only, created by the same brilliant mangaka as the more recent Innocent, Shinichi Sakamoto.
The most identifiable and accessible real-world locations are Takatori-yama Observation Platform and Jinmu-ji Temple outside Yokosuka. Other pins are much less precise. Another interesting location not featured in the manga is the Kato Buntaro Memorial Library.
