Rei Kiriyama, a 17-year-old depressed introvert and prodigious professional shogi player, leaves his home and moves into a lonesome and barebones Tokyo apartment. In Tokyo, Rei meets a trio of sisters living in a wagashi shop. Akari, the oldest, is determined to combat Rei’s loneliness and poorly sustained lifestyle with motherly hospitality. The sisters, coping with past tragedies, also share with Rei a unique familial bond that he has lacked for most of his life. Kiriyama gradually develops both his playstyle and his relationships with others. 3-Gatsu started out as a Chica Umino manga and has 2 anime seasons.
The shogi hall and surrounding neighborhood spots are in Sendagaya. There are a few important scenes that take place around Chuo and Tsukishima. Two of the travel shogi matches took place in Kyoto and Yamagata. Tendo, Yamagata is where human shogi takes place in real life at an annual festival and is also home to a shogi museum.
