The Moomins

The Moomins are the central characters in a series of novels, short stories, and a comic strip by Finnish writer and illustrator Tove Jansson. They are a family of white, round fairy-tale characters with large snouts who live in a house in a land called Moominvalley. While they might look like hippopotamuses at first glance, the Moomin family are trolls. The first Moomins animated series was a coproduction between Japanese Mushi Pro animators and Dutch directors and voice actors.

Whether or not the animated Moomins series is explicitly ‘anime’ is a bit up in the air, but either way the Moomins as characters remain incredibly popular in Japan. Alongside Heidi, the Moomins are recognized for driving a wave of Japanese tourism to Europe.
